In 1912 Gus became a police office with the El Paso Police Department. At the age of 40 he was killed in the line of duty after being shot by a .41 Caliber handgun.

On February 13th, 1915, Officer Gus Chitwood was sent with other officers to the alley west of Florence Street, between 3rd and 4th streets regarding a subject firing a gun. While searching the alley, the suspect emerged from a doorway and shot Officer Chitwood in the chest. He died within a few minutes of being shot. After being fired upon by other officers, the suspect escaped, only to be captured within an hour. The newspaper reports the suspect confessed to the crime during the interrogation.
