John Dempsey Porteous came to Australia with his parents John Dempsey & Janet Dempsey nee Gray from Scotland. After arriving in Australia in 1849 his father John Dempsey died leaving his mother alone. In 1852 his mother Janet married Andrew Porteous a 38 year old sheep farmer from Carngham Victoria. He became the stepson of Andrew Porteous and took on his name John Dempsey-Porteous. He met and married Catherine Rosetta Fletcher who was living with her parents in Carngham. They married and raised 9 children together. Their 2nd child Andrew Charles Porteous died at the age of 9 weeks however the other 8 children married and had children. Three of their children married cousins 2 on the Fletcher side of the family and one on the Weir side. His wife Catherine Rosetta Fletcher died in 1900 and is buried with him.
