José Vicente Ortega y López was the son of José Ortega y Carrillo and María Francisca López y Mora. He was born at Mission San Vicente Ferrer, Baja California, about 1785 (1790 Census). He enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leather jacket) at the Presidio of Santa Bárbara and served for many years as an escolta at Mission Santa Ynez. José married María Estefana Olivera y Féliz (SBV Baptism 00387) at Mission Santa Ynez on January 11, 1807 (SI Marriage 00101). He died on the Ortega family's Rancho del Refugio and was buried in the Santa Ynez mission cemetery October 22, 1817 (SI Death 00592).
