Jose María Ortega y Carrillo was born at Loreto, Baja California, about 1760. Church records identify him variously as José María and Joseph María. He accompanied his parents to Alta California where he enlisted as a soldado de cuera about 1778. He married María Francisca López y Mora at the San Diego Presidio Chapel June 13, 1779 (SD Marriage 00178). He retired as a sargento (sergeant) and died at Rancho N. S. del Refugio. He was buried in the Santa Bárbara Mission Cemetery March 7, 1822 ("Cementerio de la misión de Santa Bárbara" BP Death 00220). Padre noted that he was a "sargento ynvalido de la compañia del ynmediato Presidio" (a retired sergeant of the [Santa Barbara] Presidio).
