Father: John Briggs; mother: Elizabeth Stambaugh, born Perry Co, PA

The News (Newport, PA), 18 Aug 1910 (Thu), page 1
Mrs. Mary A. (Briggs) Baker, widow of John Baker, died suddenly of heart failure on Monday at 7.30 p. m. at her home in East Newport. She had not been in good health for some time, although the evening of her death she appeared about as well as usual. She and her daughter, Miss Alice Baker, her only surviving child, were sitting in the front room of their home when Mrs. Baker went out to the closet in the yard. Not returning for some time Miss Baker went out to look for her and found her dead, her body being warm, indicating that her spirit had taken its flight only a short while before.
She was the daughter of the late John Briggs and wife, and was born at Blain November 8, 1840. She and John Baker of that place were married by Rev. J. Ernest Klopp November 24, 1864, after his return from the army where he had served nine months in Co. G, 153d Pennsylvania Volunteers. Two days after marriage he was drafted and at once re-entered the service, serving until the close of the war. They came to this place in the fall of 1888. He died July 21, 1900. Their only son, John, died December 24, 1905. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Jeremiah Hartzell of Pitcairn, Pa.
She was a member of the Lutheran church and had many friends, being highly esteemed, to whom her sudden death has come as a severe shock. Her daughter, Miss Alice Baker, has been almost prostrated by the crushing blow which the death of her mother has subjected her to bear.
The funeral will be this morning. Services will be conducted by Rev. Joel Grubb of New Kingston, at the house at 10 o'clock. The interment will be in Newport Cemetery.
