Elsie & Gene raised their niece, Elsie Louise Shiflett, as their own daughter. They never legally adopted her as Ruby (Elsie's sister) would not allow it, although her name was later legally changed to Pence.

The family story, as told by a cousin (Charles Sands), is that Elsie & Gene joked that they spend "all that money" to have her name changed to "Pence," and then she married George Minner.

Ann Melton (#49114004) identifies Elsie & Gene has her Nana & Pop.

Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie Mabel Pence will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Dr. Albert G. Edwards will be in charge of the services and burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery.
