LeRoy M. Backus Jr. was born in Seattle, Washington. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of Washington. Before his graduation from the university he operated the Potlatch Pottery. From 1940 to 1945 he served with the United Stated Navy including supply duty in Australia, at sea, in Miami and with the Pacific Fleet Headquarters. He was later on active duty from 1947 to 1949. He was a retired Naval Reserve commander and a retired investment broker formerly with Harris, Upham & Co. Inc. He was a member of The Highlands, the Seattle Golf and Country Club, the Frontenac Rod and Gun Club, the Army-Navy Club of Washington, D.C. and was past president of the Sons of the Revolution in Seattle. He died at age 56 on Tuesday, August 3, 1971 in a hospital. Survivors included his wife, Betty and two sons of Seattle; two sisters: Mrs. Emma Constans [1908-1985] of California and Mrs. Edith Lynch of Seattle and two brothers: W. Clinton Backusof California and Manson F. Backus II of Seattle. Remembrances were suggested to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.
