Mrs. Backus Is Taken By Death
Mrs. Edith Helen Fredericka Backus died yesterday afternoon at her home in The Highlands after an illness of two years. She was the wife of Leroy M. Backus, real estate operator and capitalist and son of Manson F. Backus, pioneer Seattle banker. Mrs. Backus was born in New York and was a graduate of Columbia University. She came to Seattle in 1898 and has been a leader in Seattle society. She founded the Women's University Club and the Seattle Day Nursery and was an active member of the Seattle Garden Club. She was a member of the Dutch Reform Church.
She was survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. R.E. Braddy of San Pedro, California and Miss Edith Marjorie Backus of Seattle; three sons, Manson F. Backus 2nd, Walter Clinton Backus and Leroy M. Backus Jr. of Seattle; a brother Harry Boetzkes of Seattle; a sister, Miss Ottilie Boetzkes of Seattle and a grandchild, Fredericka Braddy of San Pedro, California.
Services were under the direction of the Bonney-Watson Company. The Rev. Dr. H.H. Gowen officiated. Cremation followed the services.
