Joseph was born, presumably, in Maidenhead Twp., old Hunterdon Co., NJ (now Lawrence Twp., Mercer Co.), where his parents resided. He married Mary Ann Phillips on 3 Mar. 1829. He was referred to as Joseph Jr. during his father's lifetime, and called Joseph Sr. when his own son Joseph was an adult.
He was a carriage trimmer/coach maker. He moved to Trenton as a young man (by 1829), and was living in Bordentown in 1836. He was in Nottingham Twp., Mercer Co., NJ, 1850; in Trenton, Mercer Co., 1860-80. He was living with his daughter and son-in-law Mary and Henry Houghtaling, 1870 & 1880.
