He converted to Catholicism and was baptized "Juan Bautista Cooper" at Mission San Juan Bautista on June 24, 1833 (SJB Baptism 04052). He married María Cecilia Miranda at Mission San Francisco de Asís (Dolores) on October 1, 1841 (SFD Marriage 02151).
