John Burwood Cooper* was born in England in 1791. After arriving in Alta California, México, he became a Mexican citizen and enlisted as an artilleryman at the Presidio of San Francisco. He converted to Catholicism and was baptized "Juan Bautista Cooper" at Mission San Juan Bautista on June 24, 1833 (SJB Baptism 04052). He married María Cecilia Miranda at Mission San Francisco de Asís (Dolores) on October 1, 1841 (SFD Marriage 02151).
* Not to be confused with John Roger Cooper, who was born in the United States and arrived in Alta California aboard the Rover in 1823. He converted to Catholicism and was baptized "Juan Bautista Cooper" at the Monterey Presidio Chapel on April 14, 1827 (SC Baptism 03485), and later married María Geronima de la Encarnación Vallejo y Lugo at the Monterey Presidio Chapel August 24, 1827 (SC Marriage 00965).
