Floyd J. Hilgenkamp, age 90, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Nye Pointe in Fremont.

Floyd was born April 26, 1922 to G.W. and Dora Hilgenkamp in Arlington, Nebraska. He attended school until the 8th grade at which time he began helping on the family farm after his father had become ill. Although he went to school through 8th grade, Floyd was very interested in educating himself especially concerning agriculture and farming. The farm has been in the family since 1867, when the state of Nebraska was established. He had hogs, chickens, and an orchard, and had a dairy operation on the farm until 1975. He married Leona Wittmann on September 28, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. After he and Leona were married, in addition to working on the farm he also sold for P.A.G. seeds for 40 years. Floyd was a traditional farmer having wheat, alfalfa, soybeans and corn but he was also open to alternatives such as grapes and aronia berries.

Floyd loved to square dance, play dominos with his grandchildren, he loved being a farmer and working outside. He was an elder at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on the school board as well.
