Gilbert was born May 7, 1916, in Arlington, Nebraska to Gottlieb William & Dorothea "Dora" Marie Charlotte (Schmidt) Hilgenkamp.

He was a veteran of World War II, and became a Sergeant of the First Calvary Division. He was in the Army for over three years, and was stationed in the South Pacific.

On February 23, 1947, he married Verna Hoegermeyer at St. John’s Church in Hooper, Nebraska. They were blessed with three sons. He and Verna farmed six miles northeast of Arlington.

Hilgenkamp was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Arlington, the Lutheran Laymen’s League, and belonged to the American Legion Post 71 of Arlington.

Gilbert P. Hilgenkamp, 71, of Arlington, Nebraska died Monday, June 8, 1987, at Memorial Community Hospital, in Blair, Nebraska.

Left to honor his memory are his wife; 3 sons: Arlen of Grand Island, NE; Duane of Arlington and Ronnie D. of Arlington; 2 brothers, Vernon of Scribner, NE and Floyd of Arlington, and 6 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents G. W. and Dora (Schmidt) Hilgenkamp.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Arlington, Pastor Dennis Maaske will officiate.

Burial will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, north of Arlington. Organ and choir director will be Dennis Godeman.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Hilgenkamp, Stanley Hilgenkamp, James Hilgenkamp, Dale Hilgenkamp, Gerald Hoegermeyer, and Merill Hoegermeyer.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Visitations are in progress at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington.

He was baptized on May 28, 1916 and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on March 29, 1931. He was united in Holy Matrimony with Verna Hoegermeyer on February 23, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hooper, Nebraska.

He entered into the United States Army on June 13, 1942 and served as Sergeant in the 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific during WWII. He was honorably discharged on November 25, 1945.

Gilbert lived in the Arlington area all his life. He farmed six miles north east of Arlington. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Laymen’s League and the American Legion Post #71 at Arlington.

He passed from this life Monday, June 8, 1987 at Memorial Community Hospital at Blair, Nebraska at the age of 71 years, 1 month and 1 day. He is survived by his wife, Verna; three sons, Arlen of Grand Island, Duane and Ronnie D., both of Arlington; two brothers, Vernon of Scribner and Floyd of Arlington, and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
