Leslie J. Merriam, 72, Rte 2 Janesville, former agricultural agent in Walworth and Dane counties, died at 3:05 yesterday afternoon enroute to Mercy Hospital.

He was county agent in Walworth from 1920 to 1929 and in Dane from 1920 to 1936 after which he was employed by L.J. Merriam Production Credit Association in St. Paul. He farmed near St. Paul five years and in 1948 located in Rock county where he farmed in Bradford, La Prairie and Harmony Townships.

Born in Darlington, June 30, 1893, he was the son of George B. and Amy Jenks Merriam. He was graduated from Darlington High School in 1912 and University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture in 1916. He taught in New York, Vermont and West Virginia prior to becoming a county agent.

He married Marian Chambers Sept 7, 1916 in Darlington. Mr. Merriam was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Roger L., Kenosha, Gerald B. Denver, Colo., and Austin A. Rochester, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, five sisters.

Services will be at 10 am Thursday in the Overton Funeral Home, the Rev. Sidney J. Francis former Presbyterian minister, officiating. Burial will be in the Darlington cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow night from 7 to 9.
