Onita "Peter" Aldridge Shephard

Onita "Peter" Aldridge Shephard, 84, died on August 14, 1999 at Emory University hospital, Atlanta, following a long illness. Her husband Robert Owen Shephard preceded her in death in 1997. Born in Winona to Cammie P. and Charles H. Aldridge, Mrs. Shephard was the eighth of nine children and is survived by her brother, John E. Aldridge of Jackson, sisters Elizabeth A. Dribben of Greenwood and Helen A. Herring of Winona.

Her children are Camille S. Anders of Decatur, Georgia and Robert "Bobby" Shephard of Riverdale, Georgia. Grandchildren are Christel Funk of Navarre, Florida, Lisa Nied of Doraville, Georgia, Melanie Futch of Statesboro, Georgia and Wendi Funk of Atlanta.

Great-grandchildren are Hunter and Lindsay Futch of Statesboro, Aja and Noa Grooms of Navarre.

Ms. Shephard, known affectionately as "Peter" to most of her family and friends, attended elementary and high school in Winona. She graduated with a BA in English from the University of Mississippi in 1936 and married Robert Shephard that same year.

A lifelong United Methodist, Mrs. Shephard had been a member of Moore Memorial United Methodist Church in Winona, Central United Methodist Church in Meridian, Grenada First United Methodist Church, and Druid Hills United Methodist Church in Atlanta.

Other memberships include DAR and the Amaranth Club. The funeral service was conducted on Monday, August 16 in the chapel at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur with burial at Floral Hills Cemetery on Lawrenceville Highway.
