Effie Nelson's birth date is based on census records. After her mother's death in 1885, Effie, being the oldest daughter, took over the raising of her younger brothers and sisters. They first lived in a log cabin, but later moved into a large, two-story frame house that Effie had planned and designed. Shortly after moving into the new house, she got sick and died.

All her life she had been "gifted with second sight." She realized she would not recover from her illness. Her greatest concern was for her little sister, Amy. Her brother William was working on a farm nearby, and he came to see her the Sunday before she died. She begged him to care for Amy. The following week a consultation of seven doctors was held in an effort to determine her ailment and its cure, but she passed away, mourned by all who knew her.
