"Death Claims Mathias Schaefer, Pioneer Settler"

"The grim reaper removed another one of the pioneer settlers of this community last Friday when death claimed Mathias Schaefer at Dr. Phillip's hospital after an illness of five weeks duration of dropsy and other complications.

"Mr. Schaefer was only of our pioneer settlers, coming here in the year of 1895 from his home in Stearns County, Minnesota, as a your man to seek his fortune in this great northwest and filed on a homestead five miles southwest of town. In the year 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Watzke and the young couple continued to make this their home until the year 1909, when the family moved to Bisbee where Mr. Schaefer engaged in the dray business and lived for seven years.

"In the year 1916 he sold the dray business and moved to a farm northeast of Bisbee where he lived until 1927 when he retired and moved to Rock Lake where he lived until the time of his death.

"He was a splendid neighbor and father and a friend of all and during his long residence here had a host of friends.

"Math Schaefer was born in Spring Hill, Minesota, in 1870, and was the son of Mr & Mrs John P. Schaefer. When he was seven years of age he moved to Melrose, Minnesota, where he grew to manhood and spent his boyhood years. In the year 1895, he came to Bisbee, North Dakota, which has been his home outside some years spent at Rock Lake and that territory. He married early in life and to this union were born six children, Carl & Frank of Bisbee, Clifford, Oscar & Robert of Rock Lake and Oliver of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, which with his widow survive him, also Mrs. Charlie Rooney of Saint Cloud, Minn; two half sister, Mrs. Niemeyer of Mylo, and Mrs. Chris. Gores Jr. of Bisbee and two half brothers. Charlie & Henry Gross of Mylo. Three of his brothers preceded him in death.

"The funeral was held from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church here on Monday with Rev. Father Nestor officiating and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery west of town. The funeral was largely attended by friends of the deceased who came to pay their last respects to the departed."
