DUBLIN — Lola Mae Bess Godby, age 87, died Tuesday night at Radford Community Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Jacob H. Bess and Sarah Florence Schumaker Bess.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles Basil Shaffer, and John A. Godby, and daughter June Duncan.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Pauline Ayers, Dublin; MrsMarie Hussey, Radford; Mrs. Leon (Burma) Smith, Portsmouth; Mrs. Andrew (Shelby) Farmer, Harrisonburg; two sons, Charles H. Shaffer, Alcoa, Tenn.; Jesse E. Shaffer Sr., Dublin; a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren; one step daughter, Mrs. Bill (Brenda) Lawrence, Rainell, W.Va.; four step sons, Henry R. Godby, Rainell, W.Va.; Frederick E. Godby, Canton, OH; John A. Godby, San Jose, Calif.; James R. Godby, San Jose, Calif.; a number of step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles M. Bess, Radford.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Dublin, with the Rev. Glen Dudding officiating. Interment will follow in, Highland Memory Gardens.
