William was named after his uncle, an eminent physician in Elizabethtown, N. J.

Death of A Veteran - William W. Winans, veteran of the War of 1812, and had he lived till next month, would have been 96 yrs of age, died in this city yesterday after a brief illness. Mr. Winans's ancestors were among the first of the Dutch settlers in America, and his father was born at what is now Elizabeth, N.J. He served in the Revolutionary War and was killed at the battle of Savannah. William W. Winans was born in Orange Co., N.Y., in 1792 and in early life took to the sea. He happened to be in Liverpool when the war of 1812 was declared. He sailed for N. Y. that day and arrived safely in port, although it was then blockaded by the enemy's frigates. He then sailed in a licensed ship to Cadiz, Spain, and again on letters of marque to Mantz, France. Having escaped capture he deemed it most prudent to return to New York. He did so, and enlisting under Capt. Swartwout was attached to Colden's Regiment of Artillery and infantry, New York Militia, September 6 - October 22, 1814, for the defence of the Port of New York. He served to the close of the war, when he received a land grant of 160 acres, which he never utilized. In 1872 he was granted a pension, which he has received since.
He was for many years in the wholesale grocery business at 23 Bowery, where he accumlated a fortune. He was married Aug. 17, 1816 to Eliza Rebecca Webb and had 11 children, 5 of whom are living. He retained all his faculties to the last, and only three days ago was downtown. A touch of pneumonia, coupled with old age, caused his death. The funeral will take place Saturday at St. Bartholomew's Church, Madison Ave, and the remains will be interred in the family vault at Greenwood. New York Times July 20, 1888

+Note: William Winans father died 1825 & was not killed at the Battle of Savannah, GA. He was in Count Pulaski's Legion, & it was Pulaski who was killed at the battle of Savannah, GA. (NJHS Vol. 8, 1925 p446)

Born as "William D." Winans Per grandson Carlton George Winans.
