On the 1855 census, Anthony, 37, is a grocer in 21st Ward in Manhattan. Living with his wife Margaret 32, and three children Susan 5, Caroline 3 and Isabell 6 months and 2 servants from Ireland. In 1860, they are in the same ward and Anthony, 41, is a Ferryman with wife Margaret 35, and 3 children, Susan 10, Isabella 5 and Antonetta 2, along with a boarder from Ireland and a servant. Daughter Caroline has passed away. In 1870, the family is living in Astoria Queens. Anthony 52, is a retired grocer living with wife Margaret 46, Susan 20, Isabella 15, Margaret Antonetta 12 and Eleanor 7 and a servant.

In 1876, Gouldings Directory for NYC lists Anthony W Winans as President of the Queens Co. Ferry co. at E 92nd St. Home: Astoria.
