Charles Kingsbury was the son of Harvey Kingsbury and Betsey White. He was born in the family's home on Kingsbury Hill, in the township of Starlight, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania...an area named after his father who had moved there from Delaware County, NY and was its first settler.

Charles married Hannah Evelina Fitch on December 28, 1850 in Walton, New York, the daughter of Cyrus Fitch and Evelina Eells.

Charles served as a Union Soldier during the Civil War [Co. F, 144 N.Y. INF] Two of his brothers also served with him and were both killed in battle. Almerian Kingsbury (b. March 24, 1830 - d. April 9, 1864) and Moses W. Kingsbury (b. December 21, 1835 - d. exact date unk). Moses was shot while cooking a meal for troops during the Battle of the Wilderness. He was a member of the Pa. Vol. Co. A, 56th Regt., 9th Army Corp - Army of the Potomac.

A memorial service was held for both Almerian and his brother Moses at the same time.

Charles and Hannah had at least five known children:

1) Mary Evelina Kingsbury
2) Adoniram "Judson" Kingsbury
3) Marilla Estelle Kingsbury
4) Charles Byron Kingsbury
5) Samuel Asa Kingsbury

It is unknown what prompted Charles and Hannah to move to Kansas (perhaps land opportunity unavailable back east), but that is where they set down roots.
