As reported in the "News Of The Day" column in the October 2, 1858 Trenton State Gazette ...

"Dr. Seldener was the son of Richard Seldener, the late Vice-Consul of Norway and Sweden at the port of Philadelphia. He was an excellent, intelligent, highly educated gentleman, and was about 34 years of age. He was, we believe, a single man. He had been a great traveler, having spent much time, of late years, on the continent of Europe. He was educated here, and received his degree of m.D. at the Jefferson Medical College"

From Wikipedia: "SS Austria was a steamship of the Hamburg America Line which sank on 13 September 1858, in one of the worst transatlantic maritime disasters of the nineteenth century, claiming the lives of 449 passengers and crew. "
