Albert McKay Dowell was one of 8 children born to John Aaron Dowell (1821-1895) and Judieth Ann Jared (1835-1923), both born in what is now Meade County, Kentucky. John and Judieth are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Livingston County, Missouri.

Albert M. Dowell married Laura L. Lay, daughter of Rufus Lay and Eviline Simpson. They had children: Alexander Dowell, Leta Dowell, and Ivia Ensor Dowell who married Albert Franklin Cartwright in Texas.

Albert and Laura left Missouri around 1900 and homesteaded land in Oklahoma Territory. From there they moved to Texas and finally to Arkansas around 1915. (Faye Hill, granddaughter of Albert and Laura Dowell.)
