Viola was the daughter of Quincey McKithan and Carrie Simpson McKithan. She loved her family, and all her grandchildren called her Mama Mac.

Viola married Monroe McDonald in Madison County, Texas on Dec. 23, 1900. After Monroe's death she married his brother, Festus McDonald.
