Her first name was Elizabeth, but she went by Bettie. I think the E. initial in her name stood for her first married name of Edwards. Smith is her maiden name. Bettie married her second husband Edward W. "Bud" Hames on 5-20-1882. Ed (or Bud as he was called) was a widower when he married Bettie and Bettie too had been previously married and had two children by the Edwards marriage (One of those 2 children was named Aurelia).

Ed and Bettie had 7 children together: Earl, Pearl (husband: John Morrison), Elizabeth Mae (husband: Leon Blackwell) , Ann (husband: Anson Clemons), and Harry (who was a baptist minister) and two that died as infants Hubert Hames May 1886-Dec.1886 and John E. Hames Dec. 10, 1890-Feb.5 1891 (both buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, TX).

Bettie died on what was suppose to have been her daughter Elizabeth's wedding day. Elizabeth and her fiance' Leon had postponed the wedding due to Bettie's illness. Her daughter Elizabeth had been caring for her ill Mother, when Bettie suddenly died as Elizabeth was feeding her some icecream. Her daughter Elizabth got married two months later in a simple service in her father's home.

Bettie's gravestone reads: "A Tender Mother, A Faithful Friend". I think that says it all.
