Son of John and Agnes Cessna.

Second marriage was to Elizabeth Hall.

In 1763 became one of the first settlers in Colerain Township, Bedford Co. He served in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Member of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention in 1774 and was one of the signers of the Pennsylvania Constitution in 1776. He served three terms as sheriff of Bedford County and a member of the Frontier Safety Committee.

The Cessna Homestead is located across the road from the Woods Church just outside of Rainsburg in Colerain Township, Bedford Co., Pa. His burial site is on what was the Frank Heming farm in 1930. No one knows why he was buried here instead of on his farm in Colerain Twp.
