Born in Pickens County, Mr. Gillespie was a son of the late Ervin Lee and Lillian Finley Gillespie. He retired from Richmond Gear and was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from March 22, 1941 to October 17, 1945 in the field artillery in France and Germany. Mr. Gillespie was wounded in combat and received 4 Battle Stars and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Hazel Hammond Gillespie of the home; two daughters, Kathy Clardy of Liberty and Joan Clardy (David) of Liberty; a son Keith Gillespie (Gaye) of Liberty; a brother, Bruce Gillespie; three grandchildren, Paula Bagwell, Ashley Turner and Bronson Gillespie.

In addidtion to his parents, Mr. Gillespie was predeceased by a sister, Katherine Gillespie; two brothers, Roy T. Gillespie and Kenneth Gillespie, and a son-in-law, Paul Clardy.
