Clarence John Engelstad, 80 of Fertile died late Friday evening at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.

He was born in Russia Township, rural Beltrami on January 17, 1899, the son of Martin and Marie Nesseth Engelstad. He grew up in Liberty township and attended rural schools there. On June 25, 1924 he was married to Olga Stephenson at Bemidji.

The couple farmed in Liberty township until retiring and moving into Fertile in 1969.

Engelstad was a member of the Varnes Lutheran Church rural Fertile and had held several church offices and had taught Sunday School there.

He was the chairman of the Board of the Garfield Insurance Company up to the time of his death, and was a former member of Liberty township board of supervisors and a school board member of District 109.

Survivors include his wife Olga; for sons; Maurice of Bloomington; Dr. Orvis Of Florence, ALA; Clayton of Fertile and Myles of Coon Rapids; and a daughter, Mrs. David (Mary Ann) Huebener of Fargo, North Dakota. Other survivors include 15 grandchildren; three sisters; Mrs. Mabel Holen, Fertile, Mrs. Page (Ella) Blum, San Jose, California; and Mrs. Kenneth (Geneva) Olson of Seattle, Washington and several nieces and nephews.
