He was baptized and confirmed at Varnes Lutheran Church near the family farm, rural Fertile. Clayton attended country school before enrolling in the North West School of Agriculture, in Crookston. After he graduated from the “AC” he worked for Peterson Implement in Fertile.

Clayton enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War stationed on Johnston Island in the Pacific and Cambria, CA. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota to start farming. He was named Polk County Outstanding Farmer of the Year in 1965.

On June 18, 1956 Clayton was united in marriage to Carole Berg at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. They lived and farmed northwest of Fertile. He was a member of Little Norway Church and served in many offices and positions over the years.

Clayton also served on the Global Health Ministries Board of Directors and was very active in helping to provide medical supplies all over the world.
