SCANDIA – Henry (Pete) Beecher Barclay, 77, of Scandia, died Sept. 15, 2009, at the Republic County Hospital Long Term Care Center in Belleville.
Pete was born September 27, 1931, at Ladysmith, to Andrew Hugh and Lila Marie (Sparling) Barclay. When the family moved to Wakefield, Pete attended Clay County's Madura country school and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1949.
He married Lila L. Alsop in her parents' Wakefield home on Dec. 17, 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force with service in Arizona, Colorado and North Africa.
He received an honorable discharge upon the death of his father-in-law John (Jack) H. Alsop and assumed the position of general manager of Alsop Sand Company, then based in Wakefield. At that time, the company had permanent locations in Wakefield and Scandia, and had a half interest in a portable sand plant with Tooter Fyfe, which operated as Alsop and Fyfe.
In the late 1950's, Pete bought Alsop's first Ready-mix plant to supply concrete for the relocation of the Wakefield community, necessitated by the creation of Milford Lake. He expanded again, buying the Ready-mix plant in Belleville. When the Wakefield work was completed, he moved that Ready-mix plant to Mankato. The creation of Milford Lake ended the Wakefield sand business and he opened a sand plant near Clay Center. In 1957, he moved from Wakefield to Belleville with his family, and in the late 1990's, he and Lila moved to Scandia.
Under his direction, the business continued to grow and is currently operating year round sand plants in Abilene, Concordia, Salina, Scandia, as well as satellite operations in Clay and Osborne counties in Kansas. The company became and continues to be a principal producer of sand in north central Kansas.
He was a member of the following organizations: Concordia Moose Lodge, Clay Center Elks Lodge, and was a lifetime member of the Scandia American Legion.
Survivors include his three children and their families, David Barclay of Northampton, Mass., Dane Barclay of Scandia, and Jo Barclay of Concordia; and five grandchildren; his sister, Chelsea Parshey of Modesto, Calif., and brother, DeForrest (Boots) Barclay of Wakefield. He is also survived by his beloved friend Helen Fielder.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the Belleville United Methodist Church in Belleville. A reception for family friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Scandia Community Center in Scandia.

A private family inurnment will take place in Highland Cemetery in Wakefield.
