John Backen, son of Ole and Anna Backen, was born July 18, 1895, at Parrish. His occupation was that of laborer. He was not married. He enlisted July 16, at Menomonie, from Downsville and was sent to Jefferson Barracks. Later on he was sent to Camp Hancock, Georgia. He had no overseas services. On July 25, 1919 he was discharged at Camp Grant, Illinois as Private Motor Machine Gun Company M G. Bn. I. S. of A. His serial number was 3369814. His discharge is recorded at the courthouse in Menomonie.
Mr. Backen is survived by his mother, Mrs. Richard Peterson and one sister, Mrs. Milas Smith, Downsville and five brothers, Arthur and Albert at home and Olaf, Ernest and George at Waterloo, Iowa.
