Sarah or "Sallie" was the daughter of Rachel Barnholt and George Washington Carpenter.

James Knox Polk Carpenter (1845-1865) - who was a Union soldier "accidentally shot by a comrade's gun" outside of Petersburg, VA just two weeks before the end of the Civil War.
