Mary Ann was born in Northall, Buckinghamshire, England, the daughter of Benjamin Johnson and Charlotte Budd. Her parents were early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her father died in England and Mary Ann came to America and Utah with her mother Charlotte in 1868. She married Edward Brain, a brick mason, on 4 May 1869 in the Salt Lake Endowment House. She was the mother of seven children, Mabel Seare, Edward Benjamin Brain (died as a child), Henry Brain, Ebenezer Brain, Fred Brain, Albert G. Brain and Alice Hust Andersen.
