RevJohn Bates-his grandfather, many years ago was a local pastor of a Methodist Episcopal Church here. He was also a farmer & he cleared the old farm which is now the home of his grandson-Jacob Bates, his first home was a little cabin the rear of the present residence & this was the first dwelling in that part of GreeneTwp. After many years of efficient labor as a minister of the gospel & as a farmer, he died on 26 Dec 1863 at the age of 83. His wife had died a few years previously on 16 May 1861. The union was blessed by the birth of the following children: John Kinsman; Calvin-born in 1820 & is one of Mercer County's agriculturists; Royal-born in 1817; Hannah-born in 1812 & was the wife of J Burch, Polly-born in 1815 & was the wife of J Sisley; Charlotte-born in 1828 & married L Kinney; Amanda-born in 1826 & married John Porter & Emily-born in 1831.
