John R. Adams, 72, of Ulster, Pa., died Friday morning, Sept. 16, 2005, at Memorial Hospital, Towanda, Pa. Born Jan. 31, 1933 in Sayre, Pa., he was the son of the late Jay and Cecile Willson Adams. John was a graduate of Sayre High School. On Aug. 25, 1952, he married the former Joyce Ann Yaple at the First United Methodist Church in Sayre. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joyce, on May 17, 2005. In early years John owned and operated his own automobile service center in Ulster. He was later employed by Mint Chevrolet in Sayre for many years until his retirement. John was active in community and civic affairs in Ulster Township, where he formerly served as a township supervisor for several years. He was a member of the Ulster Chamber of Commerce, Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Department, Ulster Ambulance Association and the Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club in Ulster and was an active member and supporter of the Ulster Recreation Board. John's life revolved around his children and grandsons, whom he loved dearly. John loved auto racing and in earlier years raced his own stock car at Chemung Speedrome. John and his son, John Jr. were members of the Wayne Lent Pit Crew during the 1996-97 championship years at Tioga Motor Sports Park in Owego, N.Y. Surviving are: his children, John R. Adams, Jr. of Ulster, Cathy A. Adams and her husband Ashley Cook of Ulster and William J. Adams of Towanda; grandsons, Cory Cook and Jay Adams; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Carlos "George" and Mary Lou Adams of Ulster; Donald and Lenora Adams of Sayre, and James and Alice Adams of Florida; his sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Frank Mitchell of East Smithfield; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends. In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude, and by brothers, Ralph and Robert Adams. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Bowen-Farr Funeral Home, 6 Gordon Farr St., Ulster. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sep. 20, at the funeral home with Pastor Sandy Brant of the First United Methodist Church, Ulster officiating. Interment will be at the Ulster Cemetery, Ulster. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Ulster-Sheshequin Recreation Center in care of Laura Blain, P.O. Box 64, Ulster, Pa. in John R. Adams' memory.
