Mary Ann Witmer was born in Allen County, Indiana. The family moved to Davenport, North Dakota for land. Her boyfriend (Perry A. Kistler) that had joined the navy came to North Dakota and married Mary Ann at her parents home in Davenport, North Dakota. Due to poor crops, Mary Ann's family moved back to Indiana but Mary Ann and her husband Perry stayed in North Dakota. They moved to a farm near Leonard, ND and later into the village where Perry was a rural mail carrier. They had five children: Velma, Marion, Perry Marjorie and Ethel. After retirement, they moved to Tacoma, Washington to live. After Perry's death in 1951, Marian moved to California to live with her daughters.
