The Muncrief Cemetery was founded February 18, 1862, by Mr. William Muncrief. His ten year old son, Robert, was the first to be buried in the cemetery. Mr. Muncrief's wife was one-half Choctaw.
The cemetery is located on a hill, covered with native grass and blackjack trees.
On June 24, 1937, Mr. Thad Smith, Jr., a Field Worker for the Works Progress Administration, submitted his report to them on Muncrief Cemetery for the Indian-Pioneer History Project for Oklahoma. In Mr. Smith's report, he noted that at the time, the surrounding land to the cemetery was owned by Curtis Smith. His report stated there were 100 graves, 47 of which had headstones in good condition, but the cemetery premises were in poor condition.
