History:
The Gatesburg area was settled by Rumberger, Rider, and Getz/Gates families. Henry Gates purchased land in the area and laid out a village in the early 1800's. The first church was a twenty-foot square building in the village served once a month by circuit riding ministers. Henry Gates promoted the work of the church and donated land to be used for a burial ground. In 1816, the Lutheran Synod received an application from the Mother Church in Pine Grove Mills to be accepted into the Synod. The Mother Church included the branch churches at Gatesburg, Boalsburg, McAlevy's Fort and Stormtown. Trustees of the Lutheran Church at Pine Grove Mills formed the governing body. The first minister of Gatesburg Church was Rev. George Smick whose pastorate covered only a few years. After his departure, the congregation was without a regular pastor until the coming in 1831 of Rev. Daniel Moser, who preached in German. Rev. Moser served until his death in 1864 although circuit changed in 1845 and included Gatesburg, Boalsburg, Pine Hall and pine Grove Mills. From 1861 to 1864, Rev. Moser was assisted by Rev. Rightmire who preached in English.
Earliest records of the Gatesburg Church are written in German and begin in March 1816. These records consist of lists of baptisms, confirmations and communicants. Spelling changes occurred in the many of the original German names with Romelbarger to Rumbarger, Rueber to Rider, Herbster to Harpster, Getz or Gotz to Gates. The earliest records have been translated by Rev. Dr. Orie E. Sunday.
A document from 8 Feb. 1834 details the settlement between Michael Reider as trustee and the congregation on account of the building of the church at Getzburg; the whole sum of cost amounted to $422.82 ½. There was a balance due the congregation of $3.16 which the said congregation agreed to give to the said Michael Reider for his troubles.
The land on which the present church stands was donated by George Kohlmeyer, who was married to a daughter of Henry Getz/Gates.
Rev Daniel Sell served as minister from 1864 to 1879, during which time the church was enlarged to twenty by forty feet. In 1867, the church received a charter of incorporation and in 1869 a new two-story church was built with a sanctuary, upstairs, and Sunday School below and included a bell tower.
The present brick church was built in 1913 with the dedication on October 12, 1913. The location of the church was moved from the back corner of the cemetery to in front of the cemetery at this time.
The Gatesburg Cemetery Association was formed in the early 1930's. The cemetery is an active one and very well-kept.
