Grace Lawn Cemetery is the city's oldest operating cemetery. It was founded in 1862 and today more than 12,000 people are buried there, many of them well-known founders and builders of the City of Elkhart including fifteen of the first seventeen mayors. C. G. Conn, leader of Elkhart's band instrument industry, is buried there along with more than 100 Civil War soldiers including a Medal of Honor recipient, Orville Chamberlain, and the youngest enlisted soldier in the Civil War, Avery Brown. Avery enlisted in the Union army at the age of 8 years, 11 months, and 13 days and was known as the "Drummer Boy of the Cumberland".
