This cemetery is sitatued directly behind Saint Mary of the Mills Catholic Church on 114 St. Mary's Place, Laurel, Maryland. It has a rich history.
The first baptism recorded in St. Mary's Baptismal Register is that of Mrs. Jenkins, by Father Francis Lilly of Georgetown on April 3,1842. On January 22, 1843 in Dr. Jenkins' architectural gem, Saint Mary's Chapel, in the town of Laurel Factory the first Mass was celebrated by Father James Ryder, President of Georgetown College.
The only segments of the original chapel that remain today are lengths of the side walls, measuring about twenty-seven feet, some distance behind the bell tower. These segments are readily identifiable by the carefully selected stones which are, without exception, light colored. In damp weather a broad vertical bleached strip shows up on the southern wall where the heat of the wood-burning stove ascended to the chimney that shows in old photographs. A noteworthy interior feature of the elongated chapel as it stands today is the pressed tin ceiling. The ceiling dates from the time of the 1890 enlargement.
