Location of Poughkeepsie's early graves (1810-1955) are stacked against each other at this site. They were relocated from the Old North Road Cemetery when the city built St. Francis Hospital on the old cemetery site in 1955.

The sundial, located in the circle in the main drive, was designed by Tiffany Studios of New York and donated to the cemetery by Poughkeepsie attorney Frederick Barnard in 1923. The dial reads "Vitae Fugaces Exhibet Horas" which translated reads "It Shows the Fleeting Hours of Life." The bands along the side read, "Time goes, you say? O no! Alas, time stays, we go," a quotation taken from the writings of Austin Dobson, and "What Shadows we are and what shadows we pursue," from a speech delivered by Edmund Burke in England in 1780.
