This cemetery has a variety of names. Today, in looking at a map of Chester Township, it is listed as Carter Cemetery. The sign at the front wall gives the name as Carter Graveyard 1736; the stone within names the location as having been Cartertown. A variety of sources provide further names for both location and cemetery, including "grave yd" on an 1870 map the Carter purchase or tract in Carterville, Chester Township; and simply a graveyard on the Carter property. One thing remains consistent: the description of the actual location confirms that the varying names are for the same cemetery.
"There was at a very early day, laid out upon the Carter tract, a graveyard which is located on the right hand side of the Concord road. Whether Jeremiah Carter and his wife were buried there or in the Friends' burying ground of Chester, I do not know. Many of the descendants of Jeremiah and Mary Carter sleep in this private burial ground." Source: Bi-centenary memorial of Jeremiah Carter who came to the province of Pennsylvania in 1682
by Thomas-Maxwell Potts, published 1883.
