Fladpole marks the grave of Confederate General James Longstreet who is buried on this hilltop, along with his wife Helen Dorach Longstreet. Longstreet was Gen. Robert E. Lee's right hand man during the Civil War who lived in Gainesville from 1875 until his death in 1904. His wife was personally appointed as postmistress of Gainesville by Pres. Teddy Roosevelt, in which capacity she served from 1904 until 1913. She also served as a US Ambassador, US Marshall & US Commissionar of Railroads.
