Add PhotosThe family burial ground of Judge James Tuggle (1799-1867). Tuggle brought his family to Ray County in 1837, homesteading 240 acres southeast of Millville. He served as Justice of the Peace for Grape Grove Township from 1838-1842, and County Court Judge from the Western District from 1842-1846.
The Tuggle's moved to Mercer County, Missouri, and sold the farm in 1857 to William Keel. In the deed, Tuggle set aside half an acre of his 240 acres, which was his family burial ground, wanting it to be preserved. It is believed that at least two of the Tuggle's children are buried there.
The deed described the cemetery as located in the north end of the 80 acres on the Western half of the Northwest 1/4th of Section 25, Township 53, Range 27.
This is also the location of a house, according to the 1877 Plat Map, when W. H. Keel owned the land. Over the years, owners of the land & cemetery have been: Vern C. Wall, H. C. White, Earl E. Miller, & is currently owned by Edward Cox Jr.
The existence of the cemetery was discovered in 2024 by Jarodd Stansberry, who was researching the Boyce family, who were said to be buried in the Tuggle family burial ground.
The last burial appears to be Sarah Boyce in 1901. Her probate records show that her children paid for a headstone to be placed in the Tuggle Cemetery, matching the design of her husband's.
