Add PhotosThe 'Indian burying-ground' in what may now be Owego is most likely private. It was upon the homestead of J. Platt and C. F. Johnson. Charles Frederick Johnson's farm house was called Meadowbank. Later owned by Lewis H. Leonard, as of 1900 (then in Tioga, now seems to be in Owego). One Jonathan Platt lived at 'Vesper Cliff' on the west side of the Owego Creek, near the Main street bridge (then in Tioga, now seems to be in Owego).
The 'Indian burying-ground' was described as being on the westerly bank of the Owego Creek, in the town of Owego.
Kanawkwis or Ka-nau-kwis (known as Captain Cornelius Sturgeon) was buried there.
Part of the 'Indian burying ground' was dug up when the hill west of Owego Creek was cut through to extend Main street west to Tioga.
Mentioned in the book titled, "History of Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins, and Schuyler Counties, New York", page 200, published in 1879...and in the book titled, "Owego. Some account of the early settlement of the Village in Tioga County, N. Y., called Ah-wa-ga by the Indians, which name was corrupted by gradual evolution into Owaga, Owega, Owegy, and finally Owego", by LeRoy Wilson Kingman, published in 1907.
