Add PhotosOn November 2, 1862, a second group from Mesilla were successful. Named by Cesario Duran, Tularosa reflected the abundance of red cattail and roses growing along the river.
A successful harvest in 1862, inspired their wives and families to settle in Tularosa. On April 16, 1868, the Apache confronted the settlement in a battle 'Round Mountain' lasting almost two days. The settlers believed their success was due to the direct intervention of God. After 26 volunteers went off to fight , those remaining local people prayed to an image of St. Francis de Paula, (brought to Tularosa from La Mesilla by Jose Maria Bernal in 1862). Following the success of the battle, construction of the Church began in the Fall of 1868. Rev. Boucard celebrated the first mass in the Church of St. Francis de Paula in May of 1869.
