Add PhotosAmong the many cemeteries in that area, the Sloan Cemetery (T-2024-C) was slated for reinternment of six graves, that of Captain David Sloan, originally buried in 1826; Susan Majors Sloan, buried 1853; Elizabeth Sloan Stribling, buried 1849; Jesse Stribling, (date of burial is difficult to read, but he died in 1841); Mary Sloan, buried 1820, (this would be David Sloan, Jr's daughter); and "Infant Sloan" with unknown burial date. They would be relocated to New Andersonville Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson Co, S.C., (now called Andersonville Cemetery).
A diligent search was made by the Corp of Engineers to locate next of kin and Grave Removal Permits were obtained in each possible instance. According to S.C. GenWeb Archives, article on "The Sloan Plantation Cemetery", a relative, Thomas (Seaborn) Sloan, was instrumental in relocating these graves to Andersonville Cemetery. However, the article erroneously states the graves were moved in 1928, which conflicts with the Corp of Engineer's records showing it was after October of 1959. Although the Sloan Cemetery is now under the waters of Lake Hartwell, it remains the original burial site of several Sloan family members.
