History of the area taken from a book called "The Names and Places of New Mexico" Revised Edition written by Robert Julyan. Page 156 states as follows: GUADALUPE (De Baca: settlement; in NW part of county, 0.5 miles W of the Pecos River; PO 1900-29). When the Casaus family settled here in 1860's, they named the locality for the Virgin of Guadalupe and a church dedicated to Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe still stands here. The community thrived, but its future was truncated when the AT&SF RR bypassed it around 1905, though Guadalupe retained enough population and status that the community in 1917 was considered a possible seat for the newly created De Baca County. The Trujillo family had a hacienda at Guadalupe - Trujillo's still live in the area - and they called the locality Las Tortolas, the "turtledoves," for the doves in the cottonwoods surrounding a spring. Though the community is all but gone, the name Guadalupe is still recognized and used in the area.
My Great grandfather Jose Catarino Casaus as well as his son Fredercio Casaus along with other family members were buried in this cemetery.
