The first deaths occurred in February 1944 and steadily increased in numbers until the peak in April 1945 with approximately 181 deaths. The number of deaths then steadily declined until there were zero deaths in August of 1946. There were ten interments scattered over the following years until the final interment in November of 1949.
Forty years later the German humanitarian organization Volksbund obtained a portion of the Marianske Lazne cemetery in order to establish a military cemetery to accept the remains of German WWII casualties recovered from across the Czech Republic. The area made available included the Berlin Cemetery. Construction of the cemetery started in 1991, and in 1995 the Berlin Cemetery was dissolved to make room for additional graves. The grave slabs were removed, and the burials of the civilian deaths were over-bedded with the recovered soldiers. To preserve the identity of the occupants of the Berlin Cemetery, 12 bronze plaques containing their names and birth/death dates were set at the northern edge of the cemetery. Their graves are still intact but now unmarked.
