Add PhotosSource: "Tombstone Inscriptions From Black Cemeteries In Haywood County, Tennessee," by Jonathan K. T. Smith, 1998 (Used with permission).
Note: Once the site of Old St. John Missionary Baptist Church, this cemetery served as a community black burial ground for generations although it has now been abandoned for burials. Judging from the many evident graves and sandstone markers, there are hundreds of unmarked graves here. Having been informed by her contacts of the existence of this cemetery, Ms Reese Moses there upon alerted the compiler about the same and he read the tombstones here in mid-November 2000. (from JKT Smith book)
From WPA cemetery survey (20 Apr 1939):
Name: St. Johns' (Old) Graveyard (Colored)
Location: 12 miles S.W. of Brownsville on Randolph-Bolivar road about 2-3/4 miles N.E. of Dancyville, Tenn.
Established 100 years ago by St. John's Baptist Church; abandoned
500 graves; 3 Acres; poor condition
