Add PhotosDuring the construction / formation of the Grand Lake of the Cherokees (now often seen shortened to simply "Grand Lake") a number of cemeteries were relocated. In some of those burial places, there were certain known and recorded burials that could not be determined, or found for re-internment. [At least that was what the GRDA reported.]
The Tyner team wanted to make a record so that the memory of these individuals would not be lost. Their information came from official Grand River (Oklahoma) Dam Authority [GRDA] records.
Identified by the Tyner team in "Our People And Where They Rest," James W. Tyner, Maxine H. Tyner and Alice Tyner Timmons, American Indian Institute, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. 1976, Volume 9, p. 47 (Library of Congress No. QE-99-C5-T97)
Their information (including any diagrams or maps) is given here as a historical reference and is presented "as is." Their book, like many such cemetery listing compilations, may contain errors. As with any genealogy information, this is merely a "source" and should be considered as such. It falls upon the end-user to verify the accuracy. The set of books are available at many Oklahoma libraries. Once freely available for online viewing, the OPAWTR volumes can now be accessed only at a LDS Family History Library, a partner library, or a Family History Center. (LDS)
The survey was done around 1970, and no markers or monuments were ever located; all now presumed lost in the construction of Grand Lake/Dam. Be aware of the possibilities that family members may have placed monuments in other local cemeteries, "CENOTAPHS", after the reported attempt to move them.
